Sandra M. Martínez, Ph.D. PCC Bio
I bring a unique blend of experience to my coaching and consulting work. My journey started with a deep passion for the arts, first as a classical pianist and then as an entrepreneurial co-director of a contemporary art gallery. Over time, my curiosity led me into the world of business and leadership, where I earned a Doctorate in Business Administration, taught at the Wharton School, and conducted research with global leadership experts.
Along the way, I’ve worked with and learned from some incredible thinkers—like David Pines at the Santa Fe Institute—who introduced me to complexity science. This perspective shaped my understanding of the non-linear, emergent, and often unpredictable nature of organizations and systems. It also clarified how we, as individuals, are not isolated actors, but deeply interconnected within our environments—simultaneously shaping and being shaped by the systems in which we operate. I’ve had the privilege of working as an executive coach and consultant across industries and cultures, navigating everything from national security strategy to executive leadership in healthcare. Growing up in New Mexico, studying in Spain, and working throughout Latin America and Europe, I’ve learned to approach challenges with openness and adaptability. Fluent in Spanish, I thrive in cross-cultural environments and bring a deeply global perspective to everything I do.
Fénix Leadership & Development’s Approach & Methodology:
My approach to coaching and organizational development is grounded in science and always tailored to meet you where you are. I draw from complexity science, adult stage development, and neuroscience to help leaders and teams navigate and thrive in the unpredictable, ever-evolving nature of today’s world.
Organizations are living, adaptive systems—far from the rigid, predictable models we often use to try to understand them. What I’ve learned through years of research and practice is that real change and development happen when we embrace complexity to understand how patterns of behavior emerge to make sound decisions and act effectively. This is why I focus on resilience at multiple levels, the individual level and within teams and entire organizations.
When I work with you, I listen carefully to your stories and experiences. I look for underlying dynamics and patterns, and I help you think creatively and strategically about how expand your capacity for leadership to influence those around you. We then work together to build the resilience and adaptability that are key to thriving in today’s complex environment.
Evidence- and Experience-based Rationale:
My approach is built on what we know from complexity science and neuroscience: that human systems are open, constantly changing, and shaped by interactions between people, ideas, material culture, and technology. Research shows that cognition is embodied—it’s not just in our heads. Our thinking, emotions, and decision-making are deeply connected to our bodily experiences and the environments we navigate. This understanding is crucial for developing effective leadership and fostering adaptive, resilient organizations. Also important is an understanding that human action is shaped by contextual, historical, and systemic factors. Individuals, while constrained by norms, values, expectations and physical environments, etc., can also be critical agents of change through their capacity to influence the system.
By applying these insights, I help leaders cultivate awareness and make sense of their environments to make sound decisions and lead their teams toward meaningful change.
