Jazz Improv as a Metaphor for Navigating Uncertainty
Jazz musicians begin their improvisations by agreeing on a few key elements: the key, the chord changes (or tune), the style and feel, and the order of solos and cues for interaction. Using these foundational agreements—combined with their rigorous training and deep understanding of music—they improvide to create beautiful, moving performances. Sometimes sensual, sometimes startling, and often lyrical with touches of humor, these pieces emerge from the structured yet flexible foundation that allows for creative interplay while maintaining coherence.
How can the interplay of jazz musicians inspire meaningful collaboration and teamwork in the workplace? What lessons can we draw to embrace and leverage situations we cannot define ahead of time?
In this workshop, Fénix facilitators offer participants an opportunity to improvise, reflect on their experiences, and identify concrete ways to apply these insights in their work. The goal is to foster resilience and coherence in navigating uncertainty.

Difficult Conversations: Balancing Candor and Diplomacy in Conflict and Change
When should we speak openly about our thoughts and feelings? How should we express ourselves, and to whom? How do our goals shape the balance between candor and diplomacy? What are the consequences of speaking up—or staying silent?
Leaders often face these dilemmas with their peers, teams, and managers. The tension between candor and diplomacy is particularly pronounced during times of conflict, uncertainty, and change. This tension also plays out differently depending on one’s relationship to the dominant culture within an organization. Individuals with perspectives, identities, and backgrounds that differ from the majority culture may experience these challenges differently.
Despite these complexities, navigating difficult conversations with confidence, humility, and skill is essential for fostering respect, trust, collaboration, and innovation.
In this workshop, we explore these dynamics and help participants develop practical strategies for engaging in conversations that are honest yet tactful, even in challenging situations.
